RED LIGHT FAQ’s

WHAT IS RED LIGHT THERAPY?

Red light therapy, also known as low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation, is a treatment that uses low-level wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular activity and promote healing. It is a non-invasive therapy that can be used to address various skin and musculoskeletal conditions.

How does RED LIGHT THERAPY work?

Red light therapy devices emit specific wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin and underlying tissues. This light energy is absorbed by the mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, which then produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of cells. Increased ATP can promote cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and stimulate collagen production.

what is the ideal range of wavelengths? what wavelengths does the confident co. red light therapy bed use?

  • 630–670 nanometers: red light

  • 810–890 nanometers: near-infrared light

  • 940 nanometers: deepest penetration

The Confident Co. red light bed uses:

  • 635 nanometers: red light

  • 650 nanometers: red light

  • 880 nanometers: near-infrared light

  • 940 nanometers: near-infrared light

What WILL I FEEL DURING A SESSION? is it hot?

Red light therapy beds generally feel warm, but not hot. The experience is often described as soothing and relaxing, with a subtle, comfortable warmth. The light emitted is not as intense as a tanning bed and is not meant to cause burning or overheating. There is also a fan you can turn on if desired.

does red light therapy hurt?

No, red light therapy is generally considered a painless treatment. It uses low-intensity red and near-infrared wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin without causing any harm. In fact, many people find the treatment relaxing and soothing. Some rare individuals may experience mild side effects such as temporary redness or irritation, but these are usually short-lived and resolve on their own.

IS RED LIGHT THERAPY SAFE?

Yes, for most people red light therapy is very safe. It doesn’t use UV light, so you can’t tan or burn from it. Professional devices like our red light bed are designed to deliver the correct wavelengths in a safe way.

what happens when i am in the bed? am i locked in?

The bed resembles a tanning bed where you will relax while surrounded by red and near-infrared light. The bed does not close completely or lock; you can easily lift the top up and down as needed. There are openings at the top by your head and by your feet, with a large enough space all around that you can move easily as you wish.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE RED LIGHT THERAPY?

Red light therapy is not recommended for:

  • Pregnant women

  • Anyone taking photosensitive medications

  • People with certain light-sensitive conditions like lupus or melasma

We are not doctors, and we always recommend you consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns—especially regarding medications or medical conditions.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Possible side effects may include:

  • Mild skin irritation: redness, itching, or burning sensations during or after treatment

  • Eye strain: it is important to wear protective eyewear during red light therapy to prevent eye strain

  • Headaches: in rare cases, headaches may occur after treatment

  • Insomnia: some individuals report feeling more alert or awake after red light therapy, which may interfere with their sleep

  • Increased sun sensitivity: red light therapy can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so it is important to use sunscreen after treatment

These side effects are typically mild and temporary, usually resolving within a few hours or days. Devices are designed to be safe and do not emit harmful levels of radiation. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, consult with a healthcare professional.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO RED LIGHT THERAPY?

For best results, most clients start with 3–5 sessions per week. Consistency matters—benefits build over time.

CAN I OVERDO RED LIGHT THERAPY?

Yes. More isn’t always better—overuse can reduce its effectiveness. Stick to recommended session guidelines. This is also part of the reason we require an introductory appointment.

how long until i see results?

Results from red light therapy beds vary, but many people start seeing noticeable changes within a few weeks of consistent use, with more significant results often appearing after 8 to 12 weeks. Initial improvements might include subtle changes in skin tone or texture, while more substantial effects like wrinkle reduction or scar fading can take longer to develop.

how will i know if it is working?

You can tell if a red light therapy bed is working by noticing subtle changes in your skin and body, including reduced pain, smoother skin, and a subtle glow. While some immediate effects like reduced swelling and improved mood may be felt, larger improvements in collagen production and muscle recovery take several weeks of consistent use to become noticeable.

What should i wear?

Expose as much skin as possible for best results. Options include:

  • Underwear or bikini: exposes maximum skin while staying comfortable

  • Loose-fitting shorts and sports bra: a modest option that still allows light to pass through

  • Avoid tight or dark clothing: these block the light from reaching the skin

Ultimately, wear whatever makes you comfortable while ensuring as much skin exposure as possible.

can i bring my phone or headphones?

Yes, but keep in mind this is a deeply relaxing experience. Many clients listen to music or a podcast—but you might find yourself drifting off to sleep.

is it safe for children?

Red light therapy is generally considered safe for children when used as directed and with proper guidance. Unlike ultraviolet light, it does not cause sunburn or skin damage. Always consult with a pediatrician or healthcare professional before using red light therapy on children. Potential benefits for children may include improved sleep, faster wound healing, and pain relief.

can i use red light therapy after surgery?

General guidelines (always with caution and medical clearance):

  • Immediate post-surgery (0–7 days): avoid red light therapy unless advised by your surgeon

  • Early recovery (1–4 weeks): begin once incisions have started to heal and swelling has subsided, starting with short sessions

  • Long-term recovery (4+ weeks): can be used for scar management and deeper tissue repair, with consistency being key to results

my skin is a little pink after my session. is this okay?

Mild redness or pinkness after red light therapy is generally normal and temporary. This response is common, especially for lighter skin tones, and usually resolves quickly. If redness is accompanied by discomfort or other concerning symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.

what should i avoid after a session?

  • Avoid harsh skincare products (acids, retinoids, or strong actives) for 24–48 hours

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure; always wear sunscreen as skin may be more sensitive

  • Avoid strenuous activity or intense exercise for a few hours after treatment

  • Avoid very hot showers or baths immediately after treatment

  • Avoid eating heavy meals an hour before and after to allow the body to focus on healing

what can i do to maximize results?

  • Protect: shield skin from sun and harsh products post-treatment

  • Hydrate: drink plenty of water and use gentle moisturizers

  • Nourish: use antioxidant-rich skincare products

  • Lifestyle: prioritize sleep, stress management, and a healthy diet

  • Consistency: adhere to your treatment schedule

  • Monitor: pay attention to your body’s response and seek guidance if needed

what wavelengths does the confident co. bed use?

Our professional-grade bed delivers the most effective ranges:

  • 635nm red light

  • 650nm red light

  • 880nm near-infrared light

  • 940nm deep near-infrared light

These reach different tissue depths for both surface-level skin benefits and deeper healing.

can i get the same results at home?

At-home devices exist, but they’re typically less powerful and don’t penetrate as deeply. Professional red light beds like ours are designed for more effective, full-body treatments.

can i get a tan or sunburn from red light therapy?

No. Red light therapy uses non-UV light and does not tan or burn your skin.

do i need eye protection?

While red light therapy is generally safe for the eyes, protective eyewear is recommended, especially for sensitive individuals or when using high-intensity devices.

can i wear contact lenses?

Yes, you can generally wear contact lenses, but removing them or using artificial tears may help prevent dryness. The lights can be bright and may cause irritation for some individuals wearing contacts.

what is the difference between at-home devices and professional red light beds?

The primary difference is power, intensity, and wavelength capabilities. Professional devices provide stronger, more targeted treatments and deliver wavelengths proven effective for deep tissue benefits. At-home devices can be convenient, but they are generally less powerful and less effective.

how do i book a session?

Everyone begins with a $40 Introductory Session & Consultation. This helps us personalize your treatment plan and gives you a chance to experience the bed before choosing a package or membership.

how do memberships work?

Memberships are exclusive and limited to 10 members at a time. To be notified when a membership becomes available, text the word RLT to 205-707-1002.

what’s the difference between a red light bed and an infrared sauna?

An infrared sauna uses heat to make you sweat and detoxify, while a red light bed uses non-heating light to stimulate your cells. A sauna works through raising body temperature, while a red light bed works at the cellular level without making you hot.
